Larger stones can be used to create a more rustic, stone wall appearance. More tightly stacked slates create a more modern profile. Consider the area you\u2019re putting the fire pit in and the ambiance you want to create.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Creating a separate space:<\/strong> Some fire pits are incorporated into an existing patio area, fairly close to the house (but not too close \u2013 you need to make sure that you are well clear of any overhangs or wooden decks). Another nice idea is to locate your fire pit away from existing built-out areas. It can make give more of a \u201ccampfire\u201d feel if you\u2019re a little farther away from the action.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Safety is important:<\/strong> Obviously, you need to be careful when lighting fires. If you have youngsters around, make sure they never try to use the fire pit alone. Adult supervision is important and so is having a fire extinguisher handy. Also, when you need to dispose of ashes, make sure they have had time to cool. Never dump your ashes into a compost pile, as they can still be warm and ignite the compost material.
